Featured Band: insomnium

I figured why not start off by featuring my favorite band;

INSOMNIUM
...................................................................

For those of you with a taste for melodic death metal, particularly from the mystic Scandinavian region and beyond, insomnium is an amazing treat.
Founded in 1997, the finish band is in my opinion one of the greatest melodic death metal bands in history.

Members:
Niilo Sevänen on death growl vocals and bass guitar formerly of 'Watch Me Fall'
Ville Friman − guitar formerly of 'Arrival' and Enter My Silence
Ville Vänni − guitar formerly of 'Watch Me Fall' and 'ex-Hateform'
Marcus Hirvonen on drums

The band combines death metal riffs and vocals with symphonic strings and piano to achieve a unique heavy yet melancholic sound. I have to say that it was their complex guitar progressions and constantly moving time signatures that grabbed me. The intricacy of their musical composition is in my opinion the perfect example of metals potential to break through the pop threshold into art music.
Yet their music is only part of the equation that is this great band. Lyrics. Now, metal critics have been known to claim that metal lyrics are often crude and juvenile. Of course, they have been known to claim this in the safety of some classroom or on day time tv interviews away from any flying guitars or swinging wrist bands. And of course metal critics only listen to American metal. Now I'm sorry if I'm walking on anyone's balls (or toes if you don't have balls... thank someone for that), but American metal is quite often nothing more than psychotic diarrhea (again I'm treading gently on your delicates, alright?). Well, insomnium isn't an American band. Need I say any more... i will anyway. If i were to define their lyrics in a few words I'd say emotive, poetic, epic, somber.....
Subjects are usually love, loss, grief and sorrow.
Two ways you would interpret this, one, depressing... depressing; Two, introspective. Introspective because I believe that the essence of Joy, life and all good things is only existent as a contrast to sorrow, joy and all tragedies. With that view, insomnium lyrics are the deep appreciation of these things.
So, Insomnium gets five stars from me, but of course that's up for debate.
